Kalasar: When the Mountain Becomes a School
Although Mount Kalasar doesn’t stand out for its height (2,230 m), it is truly unique for the views that open up from it. And once again, the “4 Peaks” youth mountain club organized a children’s hike in a direction that was impressive both for its views and for the obstacles to overcome.
The mountain is located in the Vayots Dzor region, on the right bank of the Yeghegis Gorge. The ascent started from Hermon village: on the other side of the river it was winter, with the snow-covered Teksar Mountains, while on this side it was spring, with greening slopes and blossoming trees.
We began the hike from the end of the village. On the left and right sides of the road there were old houses with stone walls and roofs that had settled over time. It seemed as if time had stood still here, while life had slowed down.
The children, with their high spirits, immediately passed on to the silence and calm. Chatting and laughing, we walked upward.
The rocky and rough slopes immediately inspired the children. Climbing in places, we reached the summit, from where an unforgettable view opened up: the Yeghegis Gorge, the snowy peaks of Teksar, Mount Sevazhayr and the neighboring villages. An eagle took off very close to us: a reminder that it’s always worth climbing higher.
The sky was mostly cloudy, with black clouds around the peaks, and at times it snowed, but it wasn’t cold. Just as we came down and settled into the car, the rain started. Nature treated us generously, giving us ideal conditions for the whole day. Following the tracks left by the wheels of the cars sliding off from the window, and the raindrops rolling down the window, we arrived in dear Yerevan.
- Distance covered: 6 km
- Elevation gain: +500 m
- Summit height: 2,159 m
These hikes aren’t just walks.
They are a school of the mountains and of nature:
— where children learn to be independent,
— to take responsibility,
— to overcome their own fears,
— and to believe in their own strength.
