Hike to the Trchkan Waterfall
The destination of the hike on January 21, 2024 was located on the border of the Shirak and Lori regions. We started from the Shirak region and approached the Lori region. We are of course talking about the Trchkan Waterfall. It is located on the border of the Shirak and Lori regions, on the Chichkhan River, a left tributary of the Pambak River. With its height of 23.5 meters, it is the highest and most abundant of Armenia’s waterfalls flowing over a flat bed. Since 2008 the Trchkan Waterfall has been included in the list of natural monuments, and since 2011 the area has been designated as a specially protected zone.
It was precisely with the aim of seeing this natural monument that we chose this hiking direction, hoping that we would be lucky enough to see the waterfall frozen.
The weather brought contrasting emotions: the sky was dark, the mountains white, and the trees on them, stripped of their leaves, were decorated with their black silhouettes. Despite the dark weather, the children were glowing as always. We had started walking from near the village of Dzorashen, and we had to return here too. The only difficulty of this hike was crossing the river. The Chichkhan River is wide and full of water, so we spent quite a lot of time choosing a suitable place to cross. The Trchkan Waterfall was also half-frozen, which made us a little sad, but it was still very beautiful. Here we met the “Trichk” hiking club. This was our second mountain meeting with the Trichk members.
After walking 12 km and covering 158 m of elevation gain, we returned to our dear Yerevan. Despite the length of the road and walking in snow, the children’s energy was endless, as evidenced by the noise and commotion that reigned on the bus.
