Mount Arshavasar?
Have you heard of Mount Arshavasar? Not only heard of it, but are you surprised too? (In Armenian, “arshav” means “hike”, so the name literally sounds like “Hike Mountain”.) It really exists and is located in the Vayots Dzor region, 3 km southeast of the village of Gnishik. Its height is 2,409 m. Last Sunday we climbed exactly this mountain with the children. What kind of hikers would we be if we didn’t climb Mount Arshavasar?
The village of Gnishik has been built and destroyed several times throughout its history. In the 13th century, Gnishik was the summer residence of the Orbelian princes. According to 2011 census data, the village had 44 residents. Today, unfortunately, this number has probably decreased.
Even before reaching Gnishik village, it was already clear that we would be walking in snow. This was the first winter hike of the year: we walked through the snow, had snowball fights, some made a little snowman (you’ll see it in the group photo), slid and rolled in the snow.
Nature seemed to have turned into black and white canvases.
Walking 6 km and covering 354 m of elevation gain, we enjoyed the winter.
P.S. We have another peak with an interesting name in our sights:
