The 4 Peaks Project on the reArmenia Platform
The 4 Peaks children’s mountain club has presented its project “The Mountains Are Our School” on the reArmenia collaboration platform. The project aims to expand 4 Peaks’ educational opportunities by creating a larger and more complete learning environment, where more children can take part in our mountain education programs and theoretical knowledge is combined with practical training. Today, our small space only allows us to work with two groups a year. Meanwhile, every year more and more children want to join 4 Peaks classes, learn the rules of safe movement in the mountains, orienteering and first aid, get to know Armenia’s nature, history and geography, and then put all of this into practice on real hikes and ascents. The “The Mountains Are Our School” project is our answer to this challenge.
What we want to create:
Through this project, we aim to expand our learning space and create the conditions children need for mountain preparation. One of our key goals is also building a climbing wall, which will give children the opportunity to learn and develop the skills needed for mountaineering in a hands-on setting. These new opportunities will allow us to welcome more children, expand our educational programs, and connect theoretical lessons more closely with practical training.
Why are the mountains our school:
Since 2016, one idea has been at the heart of 4 Peaks’ work: educating children through the mountains as well. For us, a hike is not simply a walk or reaching a summit. Before heading into the mountains, children learn. During our 5-month educational program, they get to know mountain hazards and weather conditions, learn to navigate with a map and compass, give first aid, pack a hiking backpack properly, set up a tent, and discover Armenia’s geography, nature and historical and cultural heritage. Then everything learned in class is taken into the mountains. There, knowledge is joined by experience, responsibility, independence, teamwork, the ability to overcome difficulties and the readiness to help one another. That is why, for us, the mountains are a school without walls.
Ten years on the trail: a new stage of growth:
In 2026, 4 Peaks celebrates its 10th anniversary. Over these years, hundreds of children have taken part in our programs. They have walked various mountain routes across Armenia and joined educational programs, camps and ascents, and for many of our students, their first childhood hikes later grew into more serious mountaineering goals. 4 Peaks children have also taken part in programs and ascents organized outside Armenia. These ten years have shown us that interest in children’s mountain education is strong, while our current capacity no longer matches the scale at which we want to continue our work. This is where our next step begins.

By presenting “The Mountains Are Our School” on reArmenia, we want our next stage of growth to be shared with the people and organizations who value children’s education, a healthy and active lifestyle, and discovering and protecting nature. We believe that one of the best ways to get to know Armenia is to explore it on foot, and we want more children to have that opportunity.
