The Orgov Radio-Optical Telescope — 4 Peaks

The Orgov Radio-Optical Telescope

This Sunday’s hike was different from our other hikes. Usually during our hikes we also visit places of historical and cultural significance, but this time the hike had a scientific ending. On February 25, 2024, we headed to the Aragatsotn region and walked from Byurakan to Orgov. At first it was quite cold, but gradually the sun began to warm us up. This route would be quite easy if it weren’t for the problem of crossing the Amberd River. Knowing the route and that the river would be full this season, we were prepared to cross it, having also brought a rope. We tied a rope across the river and safely crossed it. The moods were a million! We reached Orgov village, presented the permission we had received in advance, and entered the Aragats scientific center, where the main hemispherical mirror of the “Herouni Mirror Radio Telescope” is located. It was right here that we admired the giant and mysterious depth of the radio-optical telescope. This huge and unique object, created by Armenian engineers, specialists and builders, continues to inspire admiration and amazement. Equally amazing is the fact that this important scientific and unique center is in such a neglected state and does not receive proper protection, attention and care. Besides that, we also saw a sundial, various control systems located in the building, and a black room that once had a soundproofing purpose. It was very interesting for the children, and the important thing is that, in addition to physical activity (we walked 5 km and covered 400 m of total elevation gain), we also gained new knowledge, got acquainted with our country’s scientific achievement, and got acquainted with Academician Paris Herouni.
